As the year drew to a close, my friends and I decided to bid farewell to the old and welcome the new with a road trip that promised both adventure and cultural immersion. Karnataka, with its rich historical heritage, became the canvas for our year-end odyssey. Our itinerary was a carefully crafted tapestry that led us through the enchanting towns of Savdatti, Badami, Pattadakal, Aihole, Almatti, and Kudalasangama.

At the break of dawn, as Bangalore slept under the comforting cloak of night, our journey began. The car engine roared to life at 5:00AM, setting the wheels in motion for an exhilarating 3-day road trip.

The darkness of Bangalore faded behind us as the first rays of sunlight painted the sky. The roads were quiet, and excitement filled the air as we navigated our way through the awakening city. The sun had just begun to cast its golden glow as we arrived in Davanagere. A local eatery beckoned with the promise of one of Karnataka’s culinary treasures – ಬೆಣ್ಣೆ ದೋಸೆ (Butter Dosa – Benne Dosa) at Sri Guru Kottureshwara Butter Dosa Hotel that fueled our spirits for the adventures ahead. The aroma of butter melting on the hot griddle mingled with the sizzle of dosa batter, creating a breakfast symphony that set the tone for the day.

Noon Tranquility: Kanthi Resorts

After satisfying our taste buds, we embarked on a scenic drive to Kanthi Resorts, Bagalakot – a tranquil oasis nestled amid nature’s embrace. The lush surroundings, coupled with comfortable amenities, provided the perfect setting to unwind and rejuvenate. A sumptuous lunch, infused with local flavors prepared us for the day’s continued exploration.

Savdatti: The Hidden Gem

Savdatti Yellamma Temple

Post lunch at the resort, our car moved towards Savdatti – a lesser-known gem with a rich history and vibrant culture. One can explore the intricate carvings of the Yellamma Temple and soak in the local flavors at the bustling markets. As the sun sets, relish the tranquility of this charming town before we head to our next destination.

Badami, Pattadakal and Aihole

badami

Badami unfolded before us like a living history book. The iconic Badami Cave Temples carved into the red sandstone cliffs left us awe-struck. Each cave told a story of its own, depicting ancient art and religious fervor. We also climbed the steep steps to the Badami Fort, marveling at the panoramic views of the Agastya Lake below. We did took blessings of Shri Banashankari Devi while heading towards Pattadakal.

Pattadakal and Aihole, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, mesmerized us with their architectural brilliance. The intricately carved temples of Pattadakal and the experimental architecture in Aihole showcased the evolution of Chalukyan art. As the sun set over the Bhutanatha Temples in Pattadakal, we reflected on the beauty of the bygone era.

Aihole

Almatti & Kudalasangama

Almatti welcomed us with open arms and the colossal Almatti Dam stood as a testament to modern engineering. The serene waters and lush greenery provided a stark contrast to the historical wonders we had encountered earlier. We spent the day unwinding by the reservoir, creating memories against the picturesque backdrop.

Our journey concluded in Kudalasangama, a significant pilgrimage site where the rivers Krishna and Malaprabha converge. The Basavanna Temple, dedicated to the 12th-century philosopher Basavanna, resonated with a sense of spiritual tranquility.

Our 3-day expedition through Savdatti, Badami, Pattadakal, Aihole, Almatti, and Kudalasangama was more than a road trip—it was a cultural immersion, a bonding of friends, and a celebration of history. The landscapes changed, the temples varied, but the common thread was the warmth of companionship and the awe-inspiring history that unfolded before our eyes. As we returned to Bengaluru, we carried with us not just souvenirs but a trove of shared experiences that would forever bind us to the heart of Karnataka. In every sunset over ancient ruins and every laughter-filled meal, we found the essence of a journey well worth taking—a journey through time, friendship, and the rich tapestry of Karnataka’s cultural heritage.
