They say planning a luxury vacation during Christmas and New Year’s Eve is a financial trap. They tell you flight prices will triple, hotels will be sold out, and you should probably just stay home.
They are mostly right—unless you know how to plan!
Last December, my group of five (four adults and a 4-year-old) executed a premium 7-day escape to Malaysia during the absolute peak season. We locked in 4-star hotels, private transfers, and full-service flights for a pre-booked cost of roughly ₹3.4 Lakhs. That’s just ~₹68,000 per person before we even landed.
If you are planning a trip & looking for a visa-free getaway that balances luxury, vegetarian food, and toddler-friendly fun—especially with vegetarians or a toddler—this is the blueprint of how we booked everything, the essential documents you can’t forget, and the strategy behind our itinerary.
The Strategy (Why Malaysia?)
Our original plan was actually Vietnam. But when we sat down to book in mid-November—just six weeks before travel—reality hit hard. Flight prices were skyrocketing, and good schedules were non-existent.
We needed a pivot, and it was Malaysia. Malaysia wasn’t just a backup plan; it was a strategic upgrade for three reasons:
- Visa-Free Entry: For a group of 5, skipping the visa paperwork and cost is a massive luxury in itself. We just landed and walked through.
- Kid-Friendly Infrastructure: Unlike rugged backpacking routes, Kuala Lumpur (KL) offers pristine malls, air-conditioned walkways, and family attractions like Immersify—crucial when traveling with a 4-year-old.
- Vegetarian Ease: We knew Malaysia’s deep Indian roots meant we wouldn’t be surviving on just bread and fries.
The Flight Strategy: Don’t Just Book a “Return Ticket”
Most travelers make a rookie mistake: they book a round-trip to Kuala Lumpur and then try to figure out the islands later. This wastes time and money backtracking.
We used Skyscanner to scout the best route & opted MakeMyTrip for reliability. We chose Malaysia Airlines over budget carriers because, with a family, the included meals and 20kg baggage allowance are non-negotiable.
The “Multi-City” Hack: Instead of a simple return, we booked a multi-leg journey:
- Dec 25: Bangalore → Kuala Lumpur (Direct, landing fresh at 07:15 AM).
- Dec 28: KL → Langkawi (A quick 1-hour internal flight).
- Dec 31: Langkawi → KL → Bangalore.
The Layover Secret: On our return leg (Dec 31), we had a 5-hour layover in KL. Instead of dragging a tired kid into the city, we treated it as a “Lounge Day.” We relaxed and had dinner at the airport lounge. One can even get a 15mins massage & take a shower in The Premium Plaza Lounge, KL. By the time we boarded the red-eye home, the little one was ready to sleep through the entire flight.
The Booking: Hybrid Luxury (Package + DIY)
I am usually a die-hard DIY traveler. I love hunting for hotel deals myself. But during the Christmas peak week, hotel rates on public booking sites were surging.
I compared the numbers and realized that a MakeMyTrip Holiday Package was actually the smarter financial move (~₹1.6 Lakh total for the land package). It bundled our hotels, transfers and major activities at a rate individual bookings couldn’t match.
1. The Transport Upgrade
This was the game-changer. The package included Private Airport Transfers. But we didn’t just get two cramped sedans; we were picked up in a spacious 10-seater Tour Mini-Bus. When you land with 5 people and 5/6 massive suitcases, stepping into your own private bus instead of haggling with two different taxis is the definition of a stress-free holiday.
2. The Hotels (And the Breakfast Win)
We split our stay between the city and the beach:
- Kuala Lumpur (3 Nights): Ibis Kuala Lumpur City Centre. It’s a solid 4-star hotel just a short walk from the Petronas Towers. The best part? Their breakfast buffet actually served hot Idli/Dosa with Vada. For a vegetarian Indian, starting the day with comfort food makes everything easier.
- Langkawi (3 Nights): Bella Vista Waterfront. A resort-style property that felt like a proper holiday—big pools and ocean breezes.
A Note on “Gala Dinners”: If you travel over Christmas or New Year’s Eve, be warned: many hotels charge a mandatory “Gala Dinner” fee payable on arrival. It’s an extra cost, so budget for it!
3. The Included Activities (The Value-Add)
This wasn’t just a “room only” deal. The package sorted out our major sightseeing days, so we didn’t have to plan a thing:
- City Private Tour: City Sights, Batu Caves & Genting Highlands. This was the highlight—a fully private vehicle picked us up for the Batu Caves and dropped us at the Genting Highlands Cable Car station. No waiting for buses, no rushing.
- Putrajaya Shared Tour with Traditional Boat Cruise: A relaxing morning exploring the pink mosque and cruising the lake.
- Langkawi Shared Tour: A classic half-day city tour.
The “Free Day” Philosophy
When traveling with a toddler, a packed itinerary is a recipe for a meltdown. Since the package covered the heavy lifting (Genting Highlands, Batu Caves, City Tours), we kept the other days completely free. We kept these as backup to be booked in Klook after landing & based on our leisure.
- Immersify KL (Immersio): We booked this on Day 1. An incredible digital art experience that kept the kid mesmerized indoors while we beat the jet lag.
- Langkawi Mangrove Tour: A thrilling boat ride through the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park to spot eagles, explore bat caves, and cruise through ancient limestone cliffs.
- Langkawi Cable Car: We skipped the queues to catch the steepest ride in the world, soaking in panoramic views of the Andaman Sea from the SkyBridge.
The Essentials: Docs & Tech
Visa-free entry is easy, but it requires one crucial step: the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC).
- The Rule: You must fill it out within 3 days prior to arrival.
- Our Timeline: We landed on Dec 25, so we sat down on Dec 23 and filled out the free online forms. Do not forget this!
Connectivity: Do not buy international roaming packs. We bought 5G eSIMs via Klook (approx ₹750/person for unlimited 5G data) after landing in Kuala Lumpur. It was instant activation with unlimited data – for 1GB/day for 7 days, it would cost approx 400/-. If you are a Jio (IN) subscriber, just enable international roaming but don’t activate any IR packages. It is free to receive SMS when abroad.
The Money: What It Cost (Pre-Booked)
Here is the transparent breakdown of our fixed costs before we even left Bangalore. This is for 5 people during the busiest week of the year.
| Expense Category | Total Cost (5 Pax) | The Details |
|---|---|---|
| Flights | ₹1.9L | Malaysia Airlines (Multi-City, Full Service) |
| Land Package | ~₹1.5L | Hotels, 10-Seater Pvt Transfers, Genting/Batu/Putrajaya/Langkawi Island Tours |
| Travel Insurance | ₹3.5k | Covered $250,000 USD per person |
| TOTAL (Pre-Booked) | ~₹3.4L | ~₹68k per person |
Note: The final trip cost came to roughly ₹4.6 Lakhs after adding our vegetarian food trails, extra daily tours from Klook, shopping, and local spends—but I’ll cover those delicious details in the next post!
You don’t need to spend ₹2 Lakhs per person to have a luxury holiday. The secret is flexibility—pivoting to Malaysia, using the multi-city flight hack, and trusting a package to handle the complex tours (like Genting Highlands) while keeping your evenings free.
